This study examined the religious and sublime meaning of light and space through James Turrell’s work. According to the previous studies on James Turrell’s work, his work analyzes the space of light and darkness from the perspective of perceptual phenomenology. On this basis, I found that there were rare cases in which his work was approached from the religious aspect of Quakers. As such, James Turrell’s work reflects Quaker beliefs. One keyword is “inner light.” In other words, we go into James Turrell’s work to see the true light. “Inner light” is Turrell’s important topic and Quaker’s core idea. Quakers shows the mystical tradition of Christianity, and also represents an ethical move to implement peace and reconciliation without staying in an individual’s mystical experience. This study mentioned three categories of the cave metaphors in Chapter 7 of Plato’s the Republic, the emanation theory of Plotinus’s Enneades, and Meister Eckhardt’s unity with God as ideas that precede Quaker’s mysticism. It also mentioned ethical mysticism, as Howard Brinton, a religious activist did. With this background, this study summarized Quaker’s spirituality into silent worship, inner light, and practice of peace, and applied them to James Turrell’s work. Above all, the place of his <SkySpace> reminds us of Quaker’s place. Like Quaker’s meeting house, the inside of “SkySpace” is where the audience sits face to face with light. Audiences appreciate the light of the sky in silence through upward holes, often involving other artistic performances, such as music and performances, in Turrell’s space. His works, such as <SkySpace> and <Wedgework>, show the similarities with Quakers not only in the form of space but also in aesthetic experiences. Soon, as a sublime experience, this study compared colored abstract paintings with Turrell’s spatial works, a trend of American art in the 1950s. As it is well known, James Turrell’s work on light and space evokes sublime and religious feelings. In particular, Turrell’s work, which unites Quaker’s spirituality, confirms the place of the other and shows how the artist can encounter the other as a work.
