The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the color selection of the main characters and storytelling in animation. Establishing a color scheme is an extremely important tool for guiding a viewer’s perception of an animation. While there is an immutable color scheme for the main character’s racial characteristics such as skin color and eye color, the color scheme of the main character’s clothing is easily modified for specific story purposes. The analysis models for this thesis are <Mulan>,<Beauty and the Beast>, and <Frozen>. They all have a female protagonist and they all have a happy ending after the resolution of a criss. They were chosen for this study because when certain situations changed, the color selection of their clothing changed, accordingly. The following is about how I conducted the study. The clothing worn by each of the main characters in the scenes when the most significant developments in the plots and narratives happened were selected as the subjects of the study. The color schemes of the tops, bottoms, and accessories worn by the main characters in each situation were classified. Each costume color was analyzed through a color image association table and an image scale. The relationship between color combination and image association was also analyzed. The study determined that in the beginning, the color schemes were used to express the personality of the main character, but then, they tended to change in accordance with the story arcs. My analysis is that it is more important to serve the plot of the story than to express the personality of the main character in movies. However, one should not only focus on individual situations when establishing a color scheme and color combinations, but also consider the overall story, character settings, and situations. The established color scheme is expected to help audiences understand characters and stories more quickly and easily. This is true not just for animations but also for webtoons, advertisements, and YouTube videos. I believe that future comparative studies of this type will to lead to significant and meaningful outcomes.
