In the domestic print market, the scope of reproductions is expanding, and the price is set by a combination of the popularity of the artist and the difficulty of the technique. However, the work of professional printmaking artists is not as well known as the effort and time spent on production. The purpose of this study is to name the works of artists specializing in printmaking as ‘original image printmaking’ and to re-examine them by analyzing differences from existing printmaking areas such as replicas. The research method is to extract the main characteristics of the works of artists specializing in printmaking by examining the preceding regulations for original print and reproductions, and then comparing and analyzing them with various theories and works. As a result of the study, first, the original image printmaking was directly expressed in the original image because the artist’s creativity was contained in the properties of the expression technique, and the technical value was highlighted compared to the reproduction. Second, the difference between the works previously handled by the edition numbering could be further deepened by the artist’s intervention in the original image printmaking. In addition, like painting, it was possible to acquire independent originality for each edition. Third, the delayed production process of works that differ in time from the fixed edition of the original image printmaking was similar to the production process of some postmodernism art works in which the work was variably completed by the artist or audience. Although reproduced, different works were able to provide consumers of printmaking with a new collection value of “my own.” These three arguments argued for ‘original image printmaking’ only by printmaking artists who are different from the existing printmaking area, and also raised discussions on changing the edition numbering. Through this study, it was possible to establish the status of only professional printmaking artists, improve the public’s perception of printmaking, and diversify modern printmaking styles.
