The Republic of Korea has recently developed initiatives to support start-ups based through a cluster of related programs with the aim of revitalizing local businesses and creating jobs. Art and culture start-ups have received significant attention, and artists are pursuing their own business models. However, the lack of knowledge of start-ups and business orientation among artists reduces the number of successful ventures. The major objective of this study is to determine consumers’ perceptual structure to develop a theoretical background to describe artists interested in building start-ups. Means-end chain analysis and the hierarchical value map are used to establish the consumer perceptual structure. The study subjects are 20 cases from Sungshin Women’s University’s Campus Town Team, which has been supporting art-based start-ups since 2019, are the study subject. A laddering interview technique is used, with 50 participants who have taken part in art-startups and the raw interview data are refined using NVivo12. Six attributes of art-based startups(design, price range, functionality, unique, art genre, and material), nine consequences(interior improvement, scarcity, stability, aesthetic experience, diverse product experiences, new cultural experience, new purchase experience, hedonic, and discomfort improvement), and four values(self-fulfillment, self-respect, a sense of accomplishment, sense of belonging). The results of the study can contribute to artists seeking to develop business models that can develop the most appropriate positioning in their contexts as well as to help develop cultural industries in the Republic of Korea.
