There is a growing interest in well-being in society and need for mental health promotion due to the high prevalence of anxiety disorders and stress in the 20 s. In this study, we aimed to identify cases where the physical environment directly or indirectly supports the mental health of university students and draw implications for the creation of well-being spaces in universities to support mental health. For this purpose, 20 universities in Korea were surveyed for their spaces and programs that support physical, mental, and social health through a website survey. We also conducted field visits and interviews with two universities in the United States that have separate wellness spaces to support mental health, and examined the process and purpose of establishment, space and programs, operation and budget, and post-use evaluation. The results showed that in Korean universities, spaces and programs focused on supporting physical health, while psychosocial health was mainly limited to support through counseling offices, and there was no separate space to support mental health. In contrast, two universities in the U.S. had separate wellness spaces and programs for relaxation and mental health recovery, including meditation, sleeping areas, and animal-assisted therapy. The spaces were characterized by biophilic design, multi-sensory design, and a bottom-up approach to management, with high voluntary participation from students. This study is significant in that it provides implications for the creation of spaces for mental health support for university students and wellness spaces for young adults.
