The burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) art has introduced a novel dimension to the art industry, significantly influencing the economics of the art market. Despite its growing prominence, discussions surrounding the valuation of AI-generated images remain limited. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to offer an in-depth exploration of the valuation of AI-generated images and the key factors that affect their appraisal. Quantitative analysis indicates a difference in the valuation of abstract paintings, with artworks attributed to human artists receiving higher valuations compared to those attributed to AI, suggesting a public bias in the perception of AI-created art images; whereas, in the concrete painting category, no statistically significant difference in valuation was observed between AI and human creators, implying a correlation between the quality of AI-generated images and their perceived value. Qualitative analysis identifies similar image oversupply, negative public opinions, and differences in image quality as the primary factors affecting the value of AI-generated images. This study not only explains the differences in valuation between AI-generated and human-drawn images but also highlights the challenges and opportunities in cultivating societal acceptance of AI art images, offering crucial insights for future research on the value of AI art in the art market.
