Purpose: This study aims to delve into emergency nurses’ perspectives on mobile barcode medication administration(mBCMA) use, identifying both the facilitators and barriers influencing its adoption. Methods: Through focus group interviews, insights were gathered from twenty nurses within the emergency department of a university hospital in South Korea. These interviews were thoroughly recorded, transcribed verbatim, and subjected to qualitative content analysis, with findings organized according to the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Results: The analysis distilled eight themes: ‘A protective measure for patient safety’, ‘Ease of documentation and recording’, ‘Redundancies arising from software constraints’, ‘The burden of device weight’, ‘Disruptions in workflow due to brief logout intervals’, ‘Recognition and expectation of accuracy among peers’, ‘Challenges in barcode scanning’, and ‘Issues with wireless network connectivity’. Conclusion: Nurses acknowledge the role of mBCMA in mitigating medication errors and augmenting work efficiency. Despite these benefits, the adoption of this technology is hindered by software limitations, the impracticality of device portability, and authentication interruptions. Consequently, enhancing mBCMA adoption necessitates organizational intervention, alongside significant improvements in the equipment and system infrastructure.
