Since the establishment of the modern theater in the West, audiences have long enjoyed performances in which the audience stays in the audience and the actors stay on stage. However, with the advancement of various technologies, “immersive theater,” a form of theater that breaks down the “fourth wall” and blurs the boundaries between the audience and the stage, is beginning to emerge. In the United States and the United Kingdom, environmental theater began in the early 2000s, and after passing through site-specific performances, it is now directing and creating performances defined by the word immersive. Currently, such immersive theater is gradually establishing itself in Korea, and related research is being conducted, but there is a lot of research on the theatrical characteristics of immersive theater and a lack of research on the stage and its space. Due to the nature of theater that creates a new relationship between the audience and the actors who perform, it is necessary to study it as a new concept of space. Therefore, in order to pursue the diversity of musical genres in the steadily growing performing culture industry, this study aims to provide a reference for planning various performance venues in the changing performance market by proposing a space plan for musical theater that applies the characteristics of immersive theater, centering on the expansion of space and the activeness of the audience.
