This study compared the expressions of surprise in Korean and Japanese through comics. It was divided into normal surprise scenes, impressed surprise scenes, horror surprise scenes, and bewildered surprise scenes. The surprise expressions that appeared in these four scenes were divided into exclamation types, emotional vocabulary types, and other types. As a result, a high and strong reactivity of emotions in four scenes was observed, with a predominant use of simple exclamations to express emotions. However, only in the horror-surprise scene, we have confirmed the use of exclamations with long lines of exclamations. In both Korean and Japanese, the form of ‘exclamation+adjective’, the type of expression of exclamations and then confirmation of the other person's favor, and the use of adverbs to indicate the degree appeared. The difference is that Korean used vocabulary that reflected cultural elements such as ‘eommaya’ and ‘sesange’, and it took the form that required ‘exclamation+explanation of cause’. In Japanese, there were many aspects of expressing emotions in the terms of adverbs, nouns, adjectives, and verbs, also they took the form of ‘exclamation+confirmation of intention’.
