Objective: This study analyzes survey results to ascertain the need and urgency of a detection and support system to mitigate human errors among railway engineers.
Background: The railway transportation system serves as a pivotal component for mass transit. Human errors by railway engineers can lead to severe consequences. While sectors like the automotive industry have implemented systems to monitor driver conditions, the railway sector remains behind, due to unique challenges and a historical lack of focus on human error monitoring.
Method: A comprehensive survey was conducted among railway engineers and stakeholders. The aim was to understand their views on human errors, their frequency, consequences, and their attitude towards a monitoring and support system. The survey also probed into real-life incidents and near-misses due to human errors.
Results: The majority of respondents acknowledged the detrimental effects of human errors during train operations. Factors such as fatigue, stress, and momentary lapses of attention were identified as primary causes. The results also revealed a strong preference for the implementation of a detection and support system, emphasizing its potential to prevent major errors, enhance safety, and provide support during operational challenges.
Conclusion: The survey highlights the pressing need for a system dedicated to detecting and addressing human errors in the railway sector. Such a system is pivotal not only for safety enhancements but also for reinforcing trust among the public and stakeholders.
Application: This research offers empirical evidence for railway companies and policymakers to prioritize the development and integration of error detection and support systems in future railway industry strategies.
