Rather than representing a single style, repetitive expression can be described as a method of embedded in all of human life, culture, and art, and in this study, we theoretically examined how the universal principle of repetition, which exists in social science, philosophy, psychology, and art, appeared in fashion. Based on this, the expressive and aesthetic characteristics of fashion design using repetitive motifs were derived. The results of the research are as follows: The expressive characteristics of the repetition were regular, reproducing past tradition and existing rules and featuring progressive changing repetition, iterative accumulative repetition in quantity, interconnected overlapping repetition and variational repetition through radical arrangements etc. Next, the aesthetic characteristics of the repetition were derived from the expressive characteristics and included circularity of order, differentiated changeability, organic relationship, and creativity. We believe the results of this study will be helpful in the process of creating fashion designs using repetition and as educational material for teaching repetitive design while contributing to the exploration of human behavior through clothing.
