Gaebyeok was the first popular magazine published domestically during a period when individuals were directly confronted with the modern and oppressive colonial state power, without intermediaries such as clan powers or the class order system, in the 1920s. Projects like the Land Survey Project and the Education Order by the Governor-General’s office, as well as various decrees and power organizations, and the processes of capital’s primitive accumulation, were processes that enforced the birth of atomized individuals by state power and capitalism.
In the case of Hakjigwang, if the acceptance of Nietzsche was triggered by colonial students aspiring for the realization of self, independence of the individual, and a desire for a strong individual and authoritarianism, then Gaebyeok, launched as part of the Cheondoism cultural movement, demonstrated individual discourse while showing the long-term practical aspect of organizing a new social order. This direction was manifested in trends of forming associations in various fields of society, such as establishing farming associations, schools, churches in rural areas, and community and religious youth associations. On the other hand, there was also a trend among the middle class to consciously form a middle class and a class of educated property owners. With the introduction of industrialization and factory system manufacturing, instead of forming a bourgeois industrial class structurally as in non-European regions, there was a tendency to rapidly form a bourgeois class through cultural movements among the educated property class.
Moreover, individuals faced with the pressure of colonial state power, without the buffer and oppressive role of clan powers or groups within the feudal class order system, aimed for independence from clan order and at the same time, aspired towards a new community such as the nation. Atomized individuals showed a trend of actively adopting the ideas of Nietzschean authoritarianism and strong individuals, but on the other hand, presented a new image of humanity with religiosity that strengthens the self through modern spiritual experiences, such as Choi Je-u’s religious mystical experiences.
