This paper analyzes the characteristics of migration narratives in the ancient history section of Korean history textbooks and explores the possibility of learning activities based on migration issues in Korean ancient history education to understand and gain insights into modern society.
In the 2015 revised curriculum Korean history textbooks, migration is used to explain how a nation was established or developed. However, this narrative can also be found in the previous 7th National Curriculum Korean history textbooks. The 7th National Curriculum for Korean History asserted that “our people” have formed a single ethnic unit since long ago. Consequently, it deemed necessary to appropriately explain the relationships between the people of the nations established by this “our people” in order to provide a coherent narrative. Migration was the evidence that could explain this succession relationship.
However, Korean ancient society witnessed diverse forms of migration beyond those serving as mere links in state succession or verifying the history and identity of “our people.” These various aspects of migration can serve as a lens through which we can gain insights into contemporary society. By utilizing this, it is expected that Korean ancient history education can also problematize the question of “who are we?” and provide students with the opportunity to explore the changing “we” and “historical we.”
