This study aims to examine the reform practices of Chinese opera artists and the trends of Chinese opera modernization in contemporary China. The modernization of Chinese opera is a topic of debate among Chinese opera practitioners and scholars. The current transformation is different from any previous reform or change in history. Previous reforms and changes have their own complexities and continuity, but this transformation and reform is a historical leap from classical to modern.
The modernization of Chinese opera in the modern period was influenced by the creation and performance methods of foreign performing arts forms. It also received the influence of other foreign art forms such as Western painting, popular music, and symphonic music. From the aspects of scripts, acting, music, etc., the innovative and transformative fusion of Chinese traditional art and Western art was realized. These attempts are beneficial attempts to modernize Chinese opera. Some of these works faced criticism from the academic community and audiences in the early stages of their performances. However, with continuous improvement and the cultivation of a new market for new works, these works have also received good reviews and good returns. Some transformations are based on the traditional characteristics of Chinese opera, while others abandon tradition. At present, the academic community and the community have reached a consensus: all modernization innovations should be based on the traditional characteristics of Chinese opera.
This study analyzes and studies three different practice methods, discusses their respective characteristics and advantages, and their role in reconstructing and disseminating traditional Chinese opera.
