This study attempted to examine the sequential mediating effect of experiential avoidance and smartphone overdependence on the sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) of college students and adaptation to college life. The survey was conducted on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade college students attending universities located in South Korea. Data from 350 participants were analyzed using Model 4 and Model 6 of the PROCESS Macro version 4.1 to verify the simple mediating and sequential mediating effects of experiential avoidance and smartphone overdependence in the relationship between the sluggish cognitive tempo among college students and college life adaptation. The results are summarized as follows: First, experiential avoidance partially mediated the relationship between the SCT in college students and college life adaptation. Second, smartphone overdependence partially mediated the relationship between the SCT among college students and college life adaptation. Third, the sequential mediating effects of experiential avoidance and smartphone overdependence on the relationship between the SCT of college students and college life adaptation were found to be significant. Based on the findings, the implications for counseling and the limitations of this study were discussed.
