Purpose: In the Republic of Korea, the upper limit for the DC/AC ratio of photovoltaic(PV) systems is conventionally set at 105%, irrespective of installation conditions, such as azimuth and inclination. The upper limit of the DC/AC ratio that does not consider these features causes negative impacts on the economics and performance of building PV systems. Therefore, this study evaluates the feasibility of segmenting the upper limit of the DC/AC ratio based on diverse installation conditions to address these issues. Method: To explore this study, a building PV system model with a DC/AC ratio of 104% was developed using a simulation program. With the developed model, an analysis of the operational maximum array power ratio to the designed array power for various installation conditions is carried out. In addition, this study also examined the effects of increasing the DC/AC ratio on performance under specified installation conditions. Result: Based on results from analyzing the operational maximum array power ratio to the designed array power, findings indicated that the south-inclined plane achieved approximately 90%, while the east-to-west vertical surfaces ranged between 66% and 80%. Further, the evaluation of the impact of increasing the DC/AC ratio under various installation conditions revealed that augmenting the DC/AC ratio to certain specified conditions notably enhanced both power generation and overall system performance. These results demonstrate that PV systems with identical array capacities can yield significantly different maximum powers based on installation conditions. This study underscores the importance of condition-specific segmentation for determining the upper limit of the DC/AC ratio.
