Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of virtual reward strategies on elderly individuals’ exercise behavior. It involves dividing 20 elderly participants into two groups: an experimental group, engaging in an exercise program with virtual reward strategies, and a control group, participating in a program without such strategies. The focus is on comparing intra-group and inter-group differences in exercise behavior stages, exercise intentions, and exercise self-efficacy.
Method: The study compared the differences between two groups of adults aged 65 years and older who were willing to participate in an exercise program. The participants were divided into two groups: one that participated in an exercise program with a virtual reward strategy and another that participated in an exercise program without a virtual reward strategy. Data processing was conducted using SPSS 23.0 statistical software, employing frequency analysis for demographic characteristics of the research subjects and non-parametric statistical tests, specifically the Mann-Whitney Test and Wilcoxon Test, to compare the groups.
Results: The summary of the study’s results is as follows: Firstly, there were no statistically significant differences in the pre-measurements of exercise behavior stages, decisional balance, and exercise self-efficacy between the experimental group and the control group. Secondly, for pre-measurements of exercise behavior stages, decisional balance, and exercise self-efficacy between the experimental group and the control group did not show statistical differences. These differences were observed in exercise behavior stages, exercise benefits in decisional balance, exercise habits in exercise self-efficacy, and the exercise environment. Thirdly, the experimental group showed statistically significant differences in exercise behavior stages and exercise self-efficacy concerning the exercise environment. Finally, the control group showed no statistically significant differences in all areas except for the exercise loss of decisional balance.
Conclusion: Educating the elderly about the importance of exercise and fostering their active participation presents challenges due to cognitive and physical decline. The development of virtual reward strategies may be pivotal in helping the elderly form exercise habits. This research aims to contribute to the sustainable management of human health.
