This paper explores how William Wordsworth manifests the sense of place and the ecological self in “Home at Grasmere” and “Michael.” It analyzes “Home at Grasmere” and “Michael” in terms of the topics such as community and ethics respectively. In 1800, Wordsworth evidently explored the connection between place and self. He tried to identify himself through the name of the spatial concept of place. To him, a place is not a landscape, a visual object. He understands it as containing personal memories and experiences. Wordsworth understood place as something that cannot be separated from the individual self, and believed that awareness of place played a role in developing the individual self into an ecological self. “Home at Grasmere,” Wordsworth describes the relationship between Grasmere and himself as communal. In “Michael,” the poet portrays that between Green-head Gill and Michael as ethical. Grasmere functions as a self-contained community. The poem suggests place and self as maintaining a communal relationship. Grasmere composed of humans and non-humans enables Wordsworth to construct his sense of place. He reveals his ecological self in a way that gives some meanings to the creatures of the human and non-human world in Grasmere. “Michael” emphasizes a communal morality, and what the poet stresses is Michael’s sense of moral obligation to the place Green-head Gill. He not only suggests that the bond with nature is the moral basis of the individual, but also implies that the place helps to form Michael’s conscience as it is a member of the same community. Michael’s sense of place about Green-head Gill meets his self and thereby creates a sense of ecological ethics. Both “Home at Grasmere” and “Michael” offers our modern ecology a way to reconsider sense of place and ecological self.
