Young learners nowadays are explosed to mobile learning environment in school or at home, and m-learning is now a commonly recognized method for any age groups. Numerous storybook applications were introduced in current smartphone app stores, but no reliable information has been provided yet regarding which storybooks are good for children and what effective mobile learning is in reading storybooks. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate mobile storybook applications for young learners. 145 storybook mobile applications were collected and 14 representative ones were reviewed in-depth according to the three criteria: 1) good story elements, 2) digital storytelling techniques, 3) effective mobile-assisted language learning. The result shows that current storybook apps mostly provide well-known classicl children’s stories, similar vocabulary size, and e-book type of basic multimedia functions while story lengths and storytelling quality remarkably vary by company. Moreover, most of the applications did not seem to be designed for mobile-assisted language learning. There were no such scaffolding functions or additional services for individualized or collaborative learning as typically expected in MALL. Based on these results, implications for effective design features of storybook applications are discussed.
