What is music in film? How and where is film music? Why does the film need music? We feel interest in these questions. Three kinds of film sound, their typical role, and their basic elements can offer us also the status, the role, and the character of music in film. In order to inquire into the relation between music and scene, we gave a thought to the function of the film music. There are two kinds of music according to the relation between music and scene. The first case is that the music is in the world of the hero and the scene. On this occasion the topos of the music coincides with that of the scene. Therefore the music plays the role of exposing the scenic internality. The Second case is that the music is in the other world out of the scene. Namely the topos of the scene doesn't coincide with that of the music. At this time the music that stands beyond the scene takes us to the other world and shows what we cannot see in this world. When we enjoy the film, our senses of sight and hearing act reciprocally and tend to rely on each other. Especially Sergei Eisenstein considered the structure of film image as the music. He saw through that the visual and the auditory are mutually involved in the process of our perception and recognition.
