As in many other metropolitan areas throughout the world, sprawling urban development has become an important policy issue that Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) faces in Korea. The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationships between urban sprawl and human health outcomes in SMA, Korea.The research design is cross-sectional and ecologic. Using cross-sectional data (2011) collected online (1,263 SMA respondents aged≥19yrs), the score of Sprawl Index (indicating urban compactness) was related to the level of walking, motorized travel, Body Mass Index (BMI) and obesity-related health problems for the survey respondents from the particular cities in SMA. Path analyses were performed to examine direct and indirect effects of urban sprawl on human health.This study shows that urban sprawl is a real, measurable phenomenon with real implication for human health. Sprawl Index had indirect significant effects on BMI, cholesterol problems and coronary heart disease, respectively. The findings of this study can be a good empirical evidence for both urban planning and anti-obesity policy tools.
