Alexander Mcqueen(Lee Alexander McQueen, 1969~2010) has developed runway fashion show as an integrated medium of presenting the intention of a designer. He substantiated his own imagination and sensibilities. Mcqueen constantly attempted to create new concept of garments and he consequently broaden the domain of artistic expressions in fashion industry. In modern fashion field, numerous studies about excellent and artistic work of Alexander Mcqueen are has been done. Therefore, it is clear that the studies of designer’s sensibility and aesthetic consciousness are needed at the same time. In this Study, I would like to analyze what Mcqueen’s messages are about and how he visualizes his ideas through collections and fashion performances. What is meaningful about this study is to enable motivating domestic young designers thinking in new ways and to open possibilities of making and showing diverse form of fashion performances. Fashion performances unify garments onto human bodies and to build new characters. Also, it maximizes the expression of designer’s ideas in more effective ways. Mcqueen expanded the aesthetic categories from beauty to sublime, by having appropriate equipment and logics. To successfully deliver the sublime which includes the feeling of impact and fear, there are two conditions required. One is to keep the psychological distance from the viewer and the Second is to give information in the process of releasing the visual object. Alexander Mcqueen had been successfully satisfied those requirements through impressive stage installations and interaction to contemporary arts. Furthermore, Mcqueen’s works could not only be fantastic but also be realistic because of his perfection in production. His experimental works were not only to show and it was absolute functional art piece. Through the study, finding more creative design development methodology for next designers could be expected and anticipating to guide a new way of developing fashion performances and to contribute to make progress to fashion field.
