In planning new cities, vehicular traffic flow is laid out first with city blocks. As a result, plans for neighborhood and pedestrians often only come as an afterthought. In fact, residents experience city by close surroundings around them not through large scale plan of the city. Therefore, pedestrian-oriented neighborhood planning should be considered first for city residents. As an effort to support building pedestrian oriented neighborhood, we tried to identify physical features to plan neighborhood commercial street. Literature review was done to identify the features. In addition, map analysis was done to identify proper street width because existing literature did not provide sufficient information for determining the width which is crucial for street use. In order to make pedestrian-oriented commercial street work well, walking should be efficient for taking care of everyday needs and leisure. Various functions including different types of stores for everyday needs should be clustered nearby so that they mutually benefit each other by providing opportunities to stop by many stores for the needs on a single trip. The study proposes small block size and 6m-12m wide street with pedestrian walk because pedestrians can use both side of stores. Building design also should support the efficiency of pedestrian trip by providing many retail options with narrow front width in given length of street. Policy support for affordable store rent can be considered as well. Pedestrian-friendly street with various retail stores for everyday needs and housing altogether can be considered as a package for neighborhood life, which can be placed strategically in a city. Limitation for consideration of neighborhood planning is discussed.
