Gyeomjae(謙齋) Jung Sun(鄭敾, 1676-1759) entered government service for the first time at 41 as an astronomer and professor for whom the gentry was responsible in 1716. A recent new theory that there are a lot of possibilities that he would be a painter of Dohwaseo(圖畵署, Painting Bureau) before he entered government service as an astronomer and professor is a misunderstanding by conducting wrong analysis of system and historical records at that time. Gyeomjae completed his career as a government official over about 40 years by retiring from Sadosi Cheomjeong(司?寺 僉正) of the fourth rank in the line of Jong(正) by a disease in 1754 when he was 79 years old after going through various government posts as Jojiseo Beolje(造紙署 別提), Saheonbu Gamchal(司憲府 監察), Hayang Hyungam(河陽 縣監), Hanseong Jubu(漢城 主簿), Uigeumbu Dosa(義禁府 都事), Cheongha Hyeongam(淸河 縣監), Yangcheon Hyeonryeong(陽川 縣令), Sejaikwisa Wisu(世子翊衛司 衛率), Jangheunggo Jubu(長興庫 主簿), Heonreungryeong(獻陵令), Jongchinbu Jeonbu(宗親府 典簿), Saongwon Cheomjeong(司饔院 僉正). After that, he became a Cheomjidongchubusa(僉知中樞府事) as a government position for the aged when he was 80 years old and advanced to the rank of prime minister by becoming a Dongjijungchubusa(同知中樞府事) as a government position for the agedagain when he was 81 years old and was granted Jeongyeong(正卿) of Hanseongpanyun(漢城判尹) by his greatest devotion in 1772 when thirteen years passed after his death. It is evaluated that such life as a government official of Gyeomjae belongs to life as a government official for a long time out of painters in the literary artist’s style of famous ex-man of noble in the period of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝). Also, as we can see from that he got high evaluation of merits, he showed a very good feature as a government official. He could spend life as a government official for a long time and could advance to the rank of the prime minister and could be granted until Jeonggyeong by the support of government officials in the line of The Old Doctrine(老論)’s Nak Doctrine(洛論) and of government officials in the line of Tangpyeong Doctrine(蕩平論) who were moderates of Young Doctrine(少論) as well as positive interest and special consideration of the great king Youngjo(英祖大王). He drew a lot of good pictures as he was beyond specialized painters as well as showed good feature bearing comparison with any literary government official in the class of the gentry. Therefore, he comes into the spotlight more by establishing true-view genre painting(眞景風俗) in the latter period of the Joseon Dynasty as a Joseon’s style of painting and by achieving creative results. By the way, a part of the academic world shows an attitude evaluating him as a simple painter with the fact that he drew more and better pictures than any painter at that time and showed a very specialized attitude and level. With such reasons, a lot of people in the academic world disclose ‘Pre-modern’ point of view. However, we can make a new analysis in completely different point of view that a positive and specialized feature of Gyeomjae like that showed a pioneering feature of ‘Modern image of artist’ to lead the spirit of the times and to realize self-awareness by sympathizing with the grand and arrogant spirit of the times that history dreamed and the times wanted, not staying at the level of a painter drawing pictures to utilize time to spare who improved upon his virtues and enjoyed himself.
