The purpose of this study is to examine the ritual praying for rain to the Dragon Gods that was performed during the Goryeo Age, based on data related to ritual ceremony for rain that were recorded in Goryeosa, Josŏn wangjo sillok, Sinjŭng Tongguk yŏjisŭngnam and the likes, to identify how ritual ceremony for rain reflected the ideological characteristics of the Goyreo Age.
In the pre-modern times, drought was a disaster which would badly affect agricultural crops. Thus, the Dragon Gods used to appear in the ritual praying for rain. Dragons or the Sea Gods were often believed as having the capability to agitate clouds into making rain.
A great deal of research about ritual for rain was conducted, mainly focusing on the Joseon Age. There were too few relevant data about this ritual in the Goryeo Age to investigate it. The ritual praying for rain to the Dragon Gods, although scarcely providing the pertained evidential materials, can be considered a ceremony that shows the most obvious example of the characteristics of the Goryeo Age.
The Dragon Gods are classified into three types. The first dragon is Sangryong with the formation of dragon used to perform the ritual for rain. The second dragon is Daeryong such as Seokcheok(lizard) used as the substitute dragons. The third dragon is Jamryong necessary for throwing all kinds of objects into ponds, in order to awaken the dragons. All the three types were proposed in the ritual for rain which was performed during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty. Meanwhile, the ritual for rain using Jamryong are not in the Goryeo Age. Considering many records compiled in the 15th century, yet, it can be found that the ritual for rain to Jamryong was also held across the corners in the rural community, throughout the Goryeo Age. The ritual for rain built on the belief of the Dragon Gods is very broadly covered around Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and others. This plainly shows how ideological pluralism was applied in the Goryeo Age.
