This study performed an assessment of the antioxidant activity and anti-wrinkle effects of Paeonia lactiflora fruit extract to explore its potential use as a cosmetic ingredient, the evaluation was performed using Paeonia lactiflora fruit hot water extract(PLF-W) and 70% ethanol extract(PLF-E). The antioxidant evaluation was performed by measuring the scavenging ability of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl(DPPH) radical, ABTS+ radical and hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), the anti-wrinkle evaluation was conducted by assessing the inhibitory activity against Elastase and Collagenase, confirming the wrinkle-improving effects. As a result, PLF-E showed superior antioxidant activity compared to PLF-W and it was confirmed that PLF-E was superior to PLF-W in anti-wrinkle inhibition activity. The antioxidant evaluation results showed that PLF-E exhibited excellent antioxidant activity with a DPPH radical scavenging ability of 89.4%, an ABTS+ radical scavenging ability of 99.8%, and a hydrogen peroxide scavenging ability of 99.9% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL. In addition, in the experiment to evaluate the inhibitory activity against wrinkle formation, the inhibitory activity evaluation against elastase showed somewhat low results, but collagenase showed excellent inhibitory activity with 96.5% inhibition at 500 μg/mL and 100% inhibition at 1000 μg/mL, proving its effectiveness. Based on the research results, it has been confirmed that PLF-E is an excellent antioxidant that can protect the skin from oxidative stress. It also suggests that PLF-E may be effective in improving wrinkles, as it exhibits excellent inhibitory activity against Collagenase. As a result of these results, it is believed that peony fruit extract has the potential to be used as a useful ingredient in selecting cosmetic materials in the future.
