Objective: The visibility of safety reflectors mounted on agricultural equipment plays a very important role in preventing collisions with vehicles. In this study, we evaluated the nighttime visibility of safety reflectors on agricultural equipment and proposed guidelines for the specifications and use of safety reflectors in agricultural equipment.
Background: Traffic accidents involving agricultural equipment have a high fatality rate and agricultural equipment has been found to be highly prone to safety hazards when moving on the road. In particular, accidents involving agricultural equipment mainly occur after dark, yet there are no standardized installation guidelines for safety reflectors. Therefore, there is a need to develop installation standards to ensure nighttime visibility of safety reflectors, as well as a user guide to teach users how to effectively install the safety reflectors.
Method: In this study, we measured reflectivity and conducted nighttime visibility experiments and evaluation for three types of safety reflectors applicable to agricultural equipment. Based on these results, recommended installation specifications and user guides were developed. For the reflectivity testing, product samples were measured in the laboratory using a luminance meter, whereas for the night-time visibility experiment, distances for recognition and caution were evaluated as subjects in a rural field according to the distance from the safety reflector.
Results: Results of the study show that the color of the reflector appeared yellow rather than red at night, and a larger reflector area corresponds to a higher luminance value. Through the night-time visibility experiments, we developed recommended specifications for three types of safety reflectors according to the safe stopping distance for a vehicle traveling with a design speed of 80km/h, as well as standard specifications and a user guide for agricultural equipment.
Conclusion: This researcher developed standard specifications and user guide for safety reflectors suitable for agricultural vehicles based on the results of their visibility assessment. Further research will be conducted to evaluate visibility according to the speed of the vehicle and to develop a user guide that can be applied to various agricultural machinery and equipment.
Application: In this study, specifications for safety reflectors of agricultural equipment have been proposed to ensure visibility, which will hopefully help to prevent agricultural equipment-related traffic accidents.
