This study examines the clothing system of the period around the Korean Empire through the relics of the Uichin royal family. The Korean Empire was an emperor country, that established a status order aligned with the Joseon ceremonial system, in contrast to the Ming system. There was a hierarchy of emperor, crown prince, and king, and distinctions were made depending on whether one would carry on the royal lineage. The emperor wore the Twelve Liang Tongcheongwan, whereas the crown prince and royal king wore the Nine Liang Wonyugwan, Eight Liang Wonyugwan, respectively. Regarding work clothes, there was a distinction between the emperor"s purple Ikseongwan and yellow dragon danryeong, the crown prince"s purple Ikseongwan and red dragon danryeong, and the royal king"s purple Ikseongwan and purple dragondanryeong. Just as the princes of the Joseon Dynasty before the Korean Empire wore black danryeong with a green outer material and indigo lining, they also wore black danryeong after the Korean Empire. Unlike royal men, royal women, including the empress, crown princess, and queen, wore Hongwonsam, and the patterns on the wonsam distinguished their status. Women who carry on the royal lineage wear the Jeonhaeng Utchima skirt. However historical picture indicate that during the Korean Empire, Empress Sunheon, who inherited the lineage when the position of empress became vacant, also wore this skirt. Under the Japanese colonial rule, the emperor"s status was downgraded to that of a king, and everyone"s status was lowered. However the formality of traditional attire remained the same as during the Korean Empire, when emperor uniforms were worn.
