Purpose: Design failure mode and effect analysis (D-FMEA) in begins the early stages of design and is completed at the time when production drawings are published. However, in the case of research and development (R&D) projects for domestic ship weapon systems, it is difficult to return the design of D-FMEA results because the manufactured prototype is mounted on the warship in the force integration prototype. In addition, D-FMEA cannot be performed for all areas of a developing weapon system. Therefore, a plan to perform D-FMEA is proposed herein, including a procedure for selecting items for D-FMEA, for application on the R&D projects of domestic warship weapon systems.
Methods: In this study, a procedure was proposed in consideration of regulations and guidelines and the development environment of domestic warship systems such as design and prototype production. In addition, a case in which potential defects and failure modes were prevented and managed in advance was presented by the D-FMEA implementation of the R&D projects of actual weapons systems.
Results: The proposed D-FMEA target-item-selection procedure was explained, and D-FMEA analysis was performed on the selected items to derive a potential failure mode with a high risk priority number (RPN). The improved RPN was confirmed by presenting and applying a design change plan for the derived potential failure mode.
Conclusion: The proposed procedure can be used to perform reliability tests for improving the potential defects identified via D-FMEA.
