Based on the case of the Storage Facility of Chungcheong region in the Gongju National Museum,this paper proposed thedouble decker storage system as a model that can improve the spatial efficiencyto solve the storage supersaturation problem in museums and art museum. To this end, the development process and supply cases of the double decker storage system in Europe, the basic name, concept and classification of it, and the spatial efficiency, cost efficiency, and structural safety of it were considered. The double decker storage system was first developed in 1996 by Qubiqa, a Danish automation company. It was supplied in earnest by Bruynzeel storage systems, a Dutch company to European museums, libraries, and archive centers. For the first time in South Korea in 2018, the Gongju National Museum reviewed and installed the double decker storage system to improve space efficiency. The name of double decker storage system was called 'double decker', 'double decker mobile shelving', 'two-tier mobile system', and 'mobile rack with mezzanine structure’. In this paper, it was decided to unify and use it as a “double decker storage system” with a high understanding of academia. In addition, there are various technological composition methods for the double decker storage system, but they were classified into two types:'general type' and 'extended type' based on differences in the composition method of mezzanine scaffolding directly related to spatial efficiency. In addition, the three characteristics of it were analyzed: spatial efficiency, cost efficiency, and structural safety. It was found that the double decker storage system has four times higher storage efficiency than the fixed storage, and among the double decker storage system types, the 'extended type' has 19.4% higher spatial efficiency than the 'general type', indicating that it is efficient in large-scale storage facilities such as regional storage, joint storage, and integrated storage. In terms of cost efficiency, it was analyzed that the double decker storage system shows 52% higher efficiency than the method of installing a single-story mobile rack on each floor. The structural safety of the double decker storage system was confirmed to have no abnormality in its own structural safety and seismic performance through simulation evaluation and analysis of the results of the real vibration table experiment.
