Study Design: A retrospective chart review. Objectives: To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Oswestry Disability Index (KODI) in patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery. Summary of Literature Review: The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is a 10-category survey that evaluates how back pain interferes with patients’ daily lives. Although some studies have assessed patients who underwent degenerative lumbar spine surgery using the ODI in other countries, such validation trials of the ODI have not been conducted in Korea. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of 50 patients who underwent lumbar spinal surgery at a university hospital. KODI surveys were administered to patients before and after outpatient care. In this process, only counseling by an orthopedic spine specialist was performed. We analyzed whether the KODI values were affected by extrinsic factors. Results: Fifty patients were included in this study. After outpatient care, 18 (36%), 15 (30%), and 16 (32%) patients recorded increased, unchanged, and decreased scores, respectively. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.94, indicating satisfactory internal consistency. The test-retest reliability was high, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.96 for the groups. No significant differences were observed in the KODI regardless of sex, age, level of surgery, or whether fusion was performed (p>0.05). Conclusions: The KODI is a reliable and valid measurement tool for low back pain examinations, especially in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery who have related disabilities. We recommend wider usage of the KODI for patients undergoing spine surgery in Korea.
