In this study, the garbage problem in Japan, especially Tokyo, during the period of rapid economic growth before and after the "Tokyo Garbage War", was examined in relation to the sea region.
The garbage issue in Tokyo during the period of rapid economic growth was based on the sacrifice of Tokyo Bay. If garbage is not disposed of without a break, taking it to the sea and landfilling it at a time when it covers the city was recognized as the biggest and only solution. And as a result, garbage islands continued to be born, starting with Yumenoshima, which was the main stage of the "Tokyo Garbage War.“
Meanwhile, garbage islands created in the sea region have been given future-oriented and nature-friendly names such as ‘Dream Island(Yumenoshima)’, ‘Young Island(Wakasu)’, and ‘Sea Forest(Uminomori)’. These names do not contain the history of these islands. Rather, it demands regeneration in the direction of covering up history and emphasizing the possibility of a new "land".
And the process of sacrificing Tokyo Bay due to garbage islands and regenerating them again eventually positions the sea region as a space where humans can "manage(or handle)." Garbage islands in Tokyo Bay are the result of the idea that humans will appropriately use part of the sea region for waste based on the development of economy and technology, and use it as a new "land" in the direction humans want after use is over.
Even now, garbage islands are being created in Tokyo Bay, and the newly created garbage islands are expected to be larger than in the past. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to pay attention to the changes that will appear in the sea space of the Tokyo Bay, intersecting the garbage problem, and the logic and ideas that will lead to the change.
