Art critic Claire Bishop(2006) characterized the social turn in the art field as a shift towardemphasizing process over product, and the fusion of the aesthetic and the political. This paper argues thatcontemporary ballet companies have undergone the social turn, focusing specifically on their politicalemphasis. Through an analysis of the core values of nine major ballet companies in the West, this study identifiesfive core values: artistry, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), education, access, and legacy. Thesecompanies prioritize education and research as much as performance, and view political and ethicalvalues as crucial to their survival. Contemporary Western ballet companies aim to gain legitimacy as socially valuable institutions bychallenging their history of privilege and discrimination, and actively embracing diversity andcommunity engagement in order to remain relevant.
