The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the types and roles of visualization materials in authorized textbooks in Life for 5th and 6th grade science under the 2015 revised curriculum to provide implications for the textbooks to be developed under the new curriculum. 9 Types of elementary 5th and 6th grade authorized textbooks were chosen to analyzed. The visualization materials of 4 chapters in Life were classified into simple illustrations and infographics, and the role of each was analyzed. As a result, first, there was no difference in the types of visualization materials among the authorized textbooks. Second, the role of simple illustrations in the textbooks was high in frequency in the order of inquiry process guidance and motivation. The role of infographics was mostly to explain concepts. Third, 5 to 6 infographic sub-types of the textbooks were used, and the ratio of structure type, process type, comparative analysis type, and illustration type accounted for 90% of the total. Based on this study, suggestions for textbook visualization materials to be developed under the 2022 revised curriculum are as follows. First, diversification of content selection should be preceded in order to promote the diversity and creativity of visualization materials. Second, a follow-up study is needed to analyze the most frequent roles of visualization materials in terms of relevance. Third, teachers should teach students how to read and interpret various visualization materials presented in Life, and the method of teaching this should be specified in the teacher's guide.
