The purpose of this study was to explore the overview of North Korean dance in the 21st century, which has not been well known. This study reviewed extensive literature centering on the North Korean magazines such as < Joseon Yesul(Joseon Arts) >, < Yesul Gyoyug(Art Education) >, and < Joseon Munye Yeongam(Joseon Arts Yearbook) >. Some video data were also used complementarily in this study. The results of this study are organized into three sections: (1) performances; (2) education; and (3) persons of dance. (1) Performances of Joseon dances created during the Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-Il eras continue, while new works are also actively being created. Although it has changed to Joseon dance, Western dance techniques such as tap dance and ballet are also performed. Meanwhile, there was a foreign ballet work performed without correction. (2) In education, the history and movement of Joseon dance are still very important. It can also be seen that North Korea is interested in teaching the accurate techniques of Western ballet. Some information on Western dance is also being introduced to North Korean society. (3) The reputation of renowned choreographers is maintained. However, the activities of new persons of dance were also confirmed. The results of this study suggest that it is time to analyze the current North Korean dances from various perspectives and points, away from studies limited to Joseon dance or Choi Seung-hee.
