Objective: This study aimed to collect and analyze quantitative data on head and jaw movements during three leakage evaluation maneuvers used in the evaluation of leakage of medical masks for personal protective equipment.

Background: Conventional mask leakage evaluation has been performed with actual human subjects wearing masks. However, the results of leakage evaluation can vary depending on the size and shape of the subject"s face, and there are limitations such as the risk of physical harm when conducting leakage tests on children and older adults.

Method: In this study, 40 participants (20 males and 20 females) aged 20 to 50 were recruited to measurement and analysis of head and jaw movements during three mask leakage evaluation maneuvers (walking at 6km/h with head movement to the left and right, moving the head up and down, and speaking Korean sentences) using an optical motion analysis system.

Results: Head movements were measured to be on average 50.3±1.2° to the right, 52.3±1.2° to the left, 40.7±2.0° upwards, and 37.7±1.6° downwards. The least movement was observed in the 50s age group (left: 47.1±2.0°, right: 48.1±1.9°, upwards: 34.4±3.9°, downwards: 33.1±2.9°). Jaw movements were found to be 16.1 ±0.6° in angle and 9.0±0.5mm in distance, with the greatest movement observed in the 40s age group (angle: 17.7±0.9°, distance: 9.9±0.6mm).

Conclusion: This study involved the quantitative measurements of head and jaw movements during a mask leakage test conducted on a sample of 40 Koreans to ascertain variations in these movements with respect to age and gender.

Application: The findings from this research may serve as fundamental data for the design of a robot that aligns with the facial characteristics of Koreans and enhance the accuracy and efficiency of mask leakage assessments.
