This paper explores Wang Hui"s, who is the most widely-known scholar in China’s ‘New Left Group,’ core concept, ‘Modernity Against the Modern’ from a theoretical perspective. Wang Hui, in his thesis ‘Current Situation of Chinese Thoughts and the Problem of Modenity’, summarized the ideological flow in China after the ‘Cultural Revolution’ and summarized the essence of China’s socialist experience as ‘Modernity Against the Modern.’ According to this concept, China pursued the modernization of the West on the one hand, but at the same time maintained a critical view of it after modern times and especially during the socialist period, and Mao Zedong, who is the most representative figure of the concept ‘Modernity agaist the Modern,’ maintained the line of modernization on the one hand, he critically evaluate the capitalist elements in capitalist line. Wang Hui summarized Mao Zedong"s perspective as ‘Modernity Agaisnt the Modern’ and argued that this concept could be an ideological resource that could capture China"s unique modernity. However, later Wang Hui did not delve into the acute ideological issues behind the concept. In other words, Wang Hui only gave an appropriate ‘name’ to Mao Zedong"s practice and the theoretical tension inherent in it, but did not dig into what kind of ideological tension principle was inherent inside such a ‘name.’ Based on this awareness of the problem, this thesis examines the theoretical tension inherent in Marxism by examining the ideological principles of Marxism in more depth and how it was actually expressed and the current meaning of such an explosion of internal tension were explored.
