This paper conducts a quantitative study on the space-category adpositions in Chinese based on Corpus, and aimed to perform empirical analysis on the quantitative type.
First, adpositions indicating the concept of space, "在, 於, 自, 嚮, 到, 往, 從, 朝, 由, 打’", were classified each per word order. Then the antecedent nouns combined with them were subsequently classified according to each part of the speech symbol. As a result, they were most frequently used with Nc (noun of place), followed by Na (common noun) and Ncd (noun of direction). Here, Na is much more frequently present in B and C types accompanying the postpositions, than Nc and Ncd (place of direction unavailable for accompanying the postposition afterward).
Next, the word frequency of the postposition present at the space-category adposition, and the presence pattern of the antecedent noun, were quantitatively studied. As a result, not only the adposition phrase distribution by preposition or postposition to the verb varied, but the type of accompanying postpositions was also diverse.
This paper has not dealt with details related to this with the limiting capacity, but aims to induce the typical characteristic and feature of space-category adpositions in Chinese, based on the study result on quantitative analysis.
