This paper focuses on the online class observation and practice of Japanese language education trainees and addresses, 1) the attitude and practice of class observation as an intern, 2) changes in consciousness after class observation and practice, and 3) what they felt through online class observation and practice as opposed to face-to-face classes. For this, a qualitative analysis was conducted using practice diaries. First, regarding 1) as a result of extracting keywords and categorizing them, three categories were extracted: “online response,” “class response,” and “posture change.” It was seen that they put a lot of thought into the method, and in particular, they reflected on the method of commenting, feedback, the timing of remarks, and support for learners. Regarding 2) trainees mentioned that “my view is broadened through observation of each class and changes in one’s own words and actions as a teacher” and the resulting “recognition of the impact on learners,” “judged from the teacher’s point of view, not the student’s point of view,” “a lot of comments recognizing that it is an opportunity to improve communication with learners through practice,” “realizing the importance of attitude in class by becoming aware of one’s habits through practice,” and “recognizing the need for teacher intervention even in learner-oriented classes.” Regarding 3) in practice, access problems and camera issues led to anxiety and difficulty in class progress, as the learners’ reactions could not be observed. In addition, compared to face-to-face classes, improved ability of trainees was required in the practice experience, which was not smooth due to the visual and spatial constraints of the online environment.
