Purpose: The purpose of this study is to conduct a media framing analysis on how the issue of the number of days allowed for absences due to attendance by student-thaletes has been portrayed in the media. The study aims to identify the frames used by the media to discuss the increase or decrease in the number of allowed days, and to analyze the underlying discourses related to student-athletes within these frames.
Method: This study was conducted based on an analysis of media framgin. For this purpose, research subjects were collected from the BIG KINDS of the Korea Press Foundation. A total of 139 articles were selected, and text analysis was conducted using sentence units.
Results: As a result of the study, it was found that 67 articles (48.2%) were value-neutral, and a fairness discourse was found in the reporting frame of these articles. Second, there were 72 non-value-neutral articles (51.8%). Out of these, 25 articles supported a reduction in the number of days allowed for attendance and absence of student-athletes, while 38 articles supported an increase. Additionally, there were 9 cases where articles presented an alternative frame. In the ocntext of reducing the number of permitted days, the discussion centered around student-athletes’ academic commitments and their right to pursue their studies. In the context of supporting an increase in then umber of allowed days, there was a strong discourse on the right to sports and the right to rest. In anl tearnative perspective, it can be explained as a balance between the right to education and the right to participate in sports.
Conclusion: It is judged that this study will help reduce confusion regarding the number of days studentathletes are allowed to be absent for attendance purposes. In dadition, it is expected that this system will be able to contribute to the field of education, particularlyn irelation to elite school sports as high-quality data necessary to suggest the direction in which this system should essentially go in the future.
