In the early spring of 1958, an organization called the American-Korean Foundation (AKF) appears in the list of sponsors for the exhibitions Masterpieces of Korean Art and Contemporary Korean Paintings held respectively at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the World House Galleries in New York city. Established in September 1959 with the longrange objectives of bringing the peoples of Korea and the United States closer together, In its early stages, AKF carried out mainly emergency relief activities for war orphans, widows, the disabled, and wounded soldiers. Therefore, the AKF‘s sponsorship of the New York exhibitions in 1958 was somewhat unusual. In this paper, I will examine the Howard A. Rusk papers stored in the State Historical Society of Missouri, and try to understand how AKF came to sponsor the New York exhibitions in 1958.
The AKF’s accountants’ reports shows that the ratio of operating expenses to program expenses began to increase, resulting in budget deficits in the mid-1950s. In order to overcome this financial crisis, AKF made a readjustment plan by which it drastically cut its staff and office space and divert its attention to cultural programs as a long-range project. Sponsorship for the exhibitions Masterpieces of Korean Art and Contemporary Korean Paintings were part of these activities. While carrying on its cultural programs, however, AKF seemed to aim for the effect of publicizing its new projects and securing a new supporter group, rather than the original purpose of cultural programs. The Scarsdale Project was also an event which was held to publicize its existence and to expand the number of supporters. In other words, for the officers who led AKF, cultural programs were merely a means of publicity and fund-raising campaigns. However, the significance of the projects conducted by AKF in the fields of education, health, and welfare is not diminished. Based on the Howard A. Rusk papers in the State Historical Society of Missouri, it is hoped that research in the fields of education, health, and welfare will be further pursued.
