Since the 2000s, memory fatigue concerned with difficult histories has been observed in Germany and the United States, and more recently in Korea, and social and political conflicts over the interpretation of difficult histories have intensified. In this context, how have museum exhibitions represented difficult histories? This article introduces three cases of museum representations of difficult histories: curation of emotions, curation with agonistic approach, and curation of ambivalence. This article explores how these curational approaches stimulate or resolve unsettling encounters between representation of difficult histories and visitors of post-memory generations. The emotional, psychological, and social ‘difficulties’ experienced by visitors can either maximise the intended educational impact of the museum exhibition or result in visitors’ avoiding and rejecting encounter with difficult histories. This article uses the concept of ‘otherness of knowledge’ by Alice Pitt and Deborah Britzman and my own concept of ‘correlativeness of knowledge’ to analyze unsettling encounters between representations of difficult histories and visitors.
