This study aims to develop a theoretical model for systematic future forecasting in the field of sports by applying major forecasting methodologies from the field of futures studies. A literature review was conducted to collect and organize data related to future forecasting methodologies, followed by an expert interviewer to assess the preliminary theoretical model’s suitability, systematicity, precision, and objectivity. A “future forecasting framework for the establishment of a theoretical model for sport” was then developed, consisting of five stages: planning, issue identification and data collection, relationship analysis, future visualization, and strategy formulation. The framework proposes specific actions for each stage, such as group meetings for determining the time frame and applicable forecasting techniques. Environmental scanning, STEEP, and big data techniques are suitable for issue identification and data collection. Trend impact analysis, cross-impact analysis, and Futures Wheel are used to analyze the relationships between future issue factors. Scenario techniques are proposed as the most suitable method for predicting and drawing the future. Finally, future response strategies based on presented scenarios could be facilitated by visioning workshops. This framework can be useful for systematic and effective future forecasting in the field of sport.
