“-te miru” is introduced at the beginners’ level as the grammatical expression for “trial”. While “-e pota” also means “trial,” it has a wider usage range than “-temiru.” This might influence the Korean native speakers learning Japanese, such as, excessive or unnatural usage. An investigation of I-JAS on the usage of “-te miru” revealed that the “desiderative form” used by advanced learners and the “past form” used by intermediate learners were used at a significantly higher frequency than by Japanese native speakers. Based on the investigation, a qualitative analysis of learners’ usage was conducted. The result revealed that some of the intermediate learners used “-te miru” as an “experience,” which is a specific usage of “-e pota.” This is considered a negative transfer caused by being unaware of the differences in usage between the two. Therefore, at the intermediate level, it would be effective to instruct students based on the difference between the two.
