The historical evaluation of Wang Qing-ren transparently reflects how the publication of Yi Lin Gai Cuo had brought a great controversy to the traditional Chinese medical community. However, among both positive or negative views, there is undoubtful agreement on the practical academic attitude and scientific spirit inherent in Yi Lin Gai Cuo. The main rationale of this consensus was its anatomical achievement. But Yi Lin Gai Cuo’s achievements extend beyond the mere discovery of unknown anatomical knowledge.
The curing culture which continued to the Qing Dynasty caused excessive medicalization, producing low-quality doctors and thus expanding social harm. For Wang Qing-ren, medicine was not an area in which anyone with knowledge could practice, as commonly believed by Confucianism. Wang Qing-ren, who defined his identity not as a good doctor but as a medical professional, reinterprets medical practice as practical medical ethics. Yi Lin Gai Cuo, which recorded the body’s internal organs in a process of exploring the fundamental causes of disease, could not guarantee totality nor integrity in itself. This is why Wang did not call his work a compendium or encyclopedia. The ultimate purpose behind completing an observation-based anatomical atlas was to treat disease. An acurate understanding of the body’s internal organs had to be premised above all else in order to identify the root of disease for treatment. This led to the need for attention to individual pathological situations of each patient in the process of treatment. In other words, disease itself had become the subject of examination.
Wang Qing-ren established a theory that links observation-based anatomical knowledge to the actual treatment of disease. With his theory as evidence, he proposed novel curative methods and systematized treatment principles that have been proved through clinical practice that they are valid to this day. Yi Lin Gai Cuo questioned and reconstructed the speculative traditional medical ideas centered on Scholar-Physicians, reflected on the work ethics of a professional medical practitioner, and through observation as an academic method and an anatomical gaze, criticized the overall traditional medical culture.
