It has been 100 years since Kaijiro Fujishima visited the island in April 1923 and investigated houses in Jeju. Houses in Jeju, which have adapted to the harsh nature for a long time and maintained a unique residential style, were rather embracing foreign cultures because they were separated from the mainland, and were our last bridgehead at the moment of absolute despair during the Korean War. As interest in travel and rural areas grows, recently, houses in Jeju are drawing attention again as they emerge as a fierce housing construction experimentation ground for young architects, a romance for retirees looking for a new type of housing, and a sanctuary of the workstation for homeworkers. This paper aims to find out the changes in Jeju houses over the past 100 years and their implications for our residential architecture in general through various materials and records, as well as works that have won major architectural awards.
