Purpose - Green trade aligns with the ideology of environmental protection and sustainable economic development, and has become an important maker in determining national competitiveness, whereas green technology is a key driver of the development of green trade. This study examined the relationship between the determinants of green technology diffusion and green trade. Previous studies and theoretical foundations suggest that economic, technological, and institutional factors influence the diffusion of green technology among countries. For this study, trade openness, intellectual property protection, the level of development of information and communication technology (ICT), research and development (R&D) investment, environmental regulations, and environmental norms were derived and used as the independent variables. A comparative analysis of OECD and non-OECD countries was also conducted.
Design/Methodology - Panel data were collected from 61 countries for the period 2007–2017. The relationship between green technology diffusion and green trade was empirically analyzed using a random fixed effects model, with the demand for green technology expected to vary among countries because of their different economic development levels and goals. A comparative analysis was conducted based on the classification of countries by the level of economic development.
Findings - We found that the level of intellectual property protection and environmental norms have a positive impact on green technology diffusion. The results of a comparative analysis between OECD and non-OECD countries according to their economic development level showed that R&D investments and environmental norms have a positive impact on the diffusion of green technologies. Furthermore, the impact of green technology diffusion is greater in non-OECD than in OECD countries. In addition, green technology diffusion promotes the progress of green technology and positively affects green trade.
Originality/value - Previous studies have focused on technology transfer and green technology innovation at the firm level; however, research on green technology diffusion is insufficient. This study explored the determinants of green technology diffusion at the national level and linked them to green trade, thereby filling a gap in the literature on green technology diffusion and providing a reference for future studies.
