Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate physical education (PE) teacher’s perception regarding the priorities of character factors that students can develop in online PE courses.
Method: First, a literature review was performed to explore and derive various character factors that can be developed through online PE classes. Second, ten experts were reviewed to derive character factors in order to categorize them into two-level components. Content validity was verified through expert reviewers. Finally, the AHP was performed to determine the hierarchy of the character factors derived from the literature review and expert reviews. The collected data were verified with Expert Choice 11.5 for consistency of response, and weights were calculated by evaluating the importance of each item.
Results: The results demonstrated that the participants in this study prioritized character factors as follows: Sincerity (0.227), Respect (0.174), Communication (0.167), Rules’ compliance (0.161), Self-understanding (0.117), Cooperation (0.088), and Emotional control (0.067). The sub-component of character factors shows that it is possible for students to develop Effort (0.100) and Activeness (0.098) the most, while Patience (0.014), Community spirit (0.016), and Leadership (0.016) were judged as the most difficult character factors to develop.
Conclusion: In summary, it is important not to conclude that online PE classes will limit the development of specific character factors, but rather to understand the phenomenon and focus on ‘how to operate and improve the quality of classes for balanced character development’. Therefore, we should seek methods for balanced character development of students during online PE classes.
