Objective: The aim of this study is to derive optimal thermal environment conditions by evaluating the psychological and physiological of workers according to the thermal environment based on PMV.
Background: Inappropriate thermal environment not only reduces worker performance and satisfaction, but can also cause cardiovascular-related diseases. Several indicators have been developed to measure the thermal environment. However, these thermal environment measurement indicators are limited in evaluating the thermal environment that humans actually feel. Therefore, it is necessary to simultaneously evaluate human psychological and physiological responses to find an appropriate thermal environment.
Method: Five thermal environments (PMV -2, -1, 0, 1, 2) were constructed using PMV, and CSV (Comfort Sensation Vote) was used for the psychological evaluation of industrial field workers, and HRV (Heart Rate Variability) was measured using ECG for physiological evaluation. ANOVA analysis was performed to confirm the difference between CSV and HRV in each thermal environment, and Spearman correlation analysis was performed to confirm the correlation between CSV and HRV variables.
Results: As a result of evaluating workers’ thermal comfort and mental stress according to thermal environment, workers’ CSV scores tended to decrease as they moved away from neutral environment (PMV 0) to cool environment (PMV -2) and warm environment (PMV +2), and mental stress tended to increase.
Conclusion: The results of the study suggested that workers’ thermal comfort and mental stress could be changed by the thermal environment, and it is believed that PMV can reflect both thermal comfort and mental stress through high correlation.
Application: The results of this study can be used as a reference for the construction of an appropriate working environment at an industrial site.
