In the 2000s, China"s presence in Latin America expanded significantly. The United States, which has hegemony in the region, initially did not attach much importance to China"s move, but began to regard it as a threat to hegemony in the mid-2010s. Nevertheless, this article argues that China is not yet at the level of threatening US’s hegemony in Latin America in terms of either hard or soft power. To show that, this article compared and evaluated, as far as possible, quantitatively the soft and hard power of the United States and China in Latin America. In order to analyze hard power, trade, foreign direct investment, loans, and aid were examined in terms of economic power, and military bases or related facilities and current status of military presence were surveyed in terms of military power. In terms of soft power, this paper focused on national reliability and attractiveness.
